The CACOVID (Coalition Against Covid-19), a private sector coalition against Covid-19, initiated by Aliko Dangote in Nigeria, has raised USD 51 million to fight the pandemic. This is part of the global move to combat the pandemic with join efforts coming in from other key influencers on the continent like Dr. Strive Masiyiwa who donated 45 respirators to intensive care units in Zimbabwe.
In addition to which his Foundation has partnered with the country’s authorities to provide free online educational materials to students during confinement.
As the pandemic continues to spread, the African private sector is mobilizing efforts to back government actions stemming from cash donations to equipment and other resources. For a continent with the youngest population, everyone remains hopeful that if the crisis is well handled, the impacts in terms of human loss will be greatly mitigated.
