Malawi’s newly elected President, Lazarus chakwera, is determined to reduce presidential powers and equally declare his assets each year as a step towards transparency. In addition to this, he says he will be open to answer questions in parliament, and render operational the Access to Information Act.
He made these declarations today, July 6, 2020, at his official inauguration ceremony, where he officially received the sword of office which confers on him the power as Commander in chief of Armed Force in Kamazu Barracks in Lilongwe.
Speaking at the ceremony, he made known his intention to propose legislation to reduce the powers of the president and empower institutions to operate independently, including parliaments and the anti-corruption bureau.
Besides, President Chakwera promised to set a good example of submitting himself to the constitutional process and answer for government actions before parliament. It is worth noting that, Chekwara won the election on June 23, 2020, with a percentage vote of 58.5%, defeating Peter Mutharika in an intense contested rerun election.
