United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Turkana County regional government are employing an app, “E-Locust”, to fight desert locusts that pose a risk for food security in East Africa and the red sea regions.
The E-locust phone app was displayed in Lodwar, Turkana in Kenya on July 2, 2020. The device gathers information in a central database which is analysed by a technical team. Results of the analysis can then be used to decide what action to take, including whether to spray pesticides either by plane or with ground teams.
It is important to note that, a huge number of locusts have been swarming across East Africa in recent months, devastating crops and threatening food security in the regions. Besides, billions of the insects have ravaged crops in East Africa and the Red Sea region in the early 2019.
